M. Antonius Aristocrates: Greek Provincial Involvement with Roman Power in the Late 1st c. BC.
The career of a man known primarily from a fleeting reference in Plutarch's Life of Antony is brought to life through a dossier of epigraphic and numismatic evidence, including an unpublished inscription and material not previously recognized as referring to him. His career provides an exemplar of the strategies used by the Greek provincial elite in maintaining and solidifying their positions of power in the time of Rome's transition from republic to empire.
